Rockfeller’s old house

The island home of David and Peggy Rockfeller. The american Tycoon bought the property in 1957 and ask for a cousin to build his dream house.
“I always try to get clues for a design from the environment » says the architect Nelson W. Aldrich. In its gentle geometry of form and masterly handling of natural materials, the house is at peace with its setting. The architect oriented the house toward the prevailing winds, thereby precluding the need for air conditioning.  The guest house, pyramid-shaped and set off some distance, accommodates Rockfeller’s six children and numerous guests. At this time some masterpieces adorned the house (a bronze by Dimitri Hadzi, a Dubuffet, an Alexander Calder stabile).
